Il 14 Febbraio 2016, la Dorothy Circus Gallery ospiterà un evento speciale di San Valentino: “Orpheus and Eurydice: Beyond the Myth”, che vedrà la presentazione dell’omonimo pop up show di Alex Kuno.

Il mito di Orfeo ed Euridice, nato nell’antica Grecia ma narrato anche dai latini Virgilio e Ovidio, rivive tra le pareti di velluto rosso della Dorothy Circus Gallery attraverso cinque meravigliose opere dell’artista americano Alex Kuno, create appositamente per questo evento. La storia tratta l’estrema devozione di Orfeo, amante poeta e musicista che attraversò l’Ade al fine di riportare la sua amata moglie alla vita. Il mito rappresenta quindi la storia di un salvataggio e di un amore che è tanto forte da poter curare e mantenere le persone in vita. L’eternità di questo mito si intreccia con l’eternità di un sentimento capace di oltrepassare la morte o qualsiasi altro ostacolo che si interponga tra i due amanti. Il mito dichiara dunque l’esistenza di un legame che può vivere per sempre tra due persone che provano sentimenti profondi l’uno per l’altro (in questo caso, Orfeo ed Euridice). I pannelli di Alex Kuno enfatizzeranno le più profonde sfumature di questa narrazione in modo del tutto nuovo ed originale, introducendo l’opera dell’artista al pubblico italiano per la prima volta.

Alex Kuno, trasferitosi a New York nel 2001 dopo aver ricevuto il suo BFA in Studio Art presso l'Università del Minnesota nel 1999, ha iniziato la sua carriera lavorativa come assistente di galleria e Art Installer per l'American Fine Art e per le Pat Hearn Art Galleries. Dopo esser tornato a Minneapolis nel 2005, Kuno ha iniziato produrre opere in cui potesse giocare nel narrare le sue storie, realizzando mano a mano, e con difficoltà, che il cosiddetto “American Exceptionalism” non è nient'altro che una pericolosa e fragile fiaba. Nelle sue opere sono presenti molti elementi: dalla fascinazione per la storia revisionista dell'esercito americano, all'amore per le opere del Rinascimento fiammingo. Nel processo di creazione, Kuno genera un mondo nuovo che, proprio come il mondo “reale”, sembra essere moralmente ambiguo. I personaggi di questo universo parallelo dimorano in una dimensione fiabesca, nella quale l'osservatore può sempre trovare una storia narrata.
Le collezioni di Alex Kuno si compongono di dipinti, disegni, e installazioni scultoree. I suoi lavori sono stati esposti in numerose gallerie e musei di tutti gli Stati Uniti, ma l'artista ha anche prodotto pezzi per clienti privati in tutto il mondo. Alex Kuno vive e lavora a Saint Paul Minnesota, dove ospita mensilmente studio visits e mostre di nuovi lavori, così come di work in progress.

On the 14th of February, Dorothy Circus Gallery will host a special St. Valentine’s event: “Orpheus and Eurydice: Beyond the Myth”, which will feature Alex Kuno’s pop-up show.


The myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, born in Ancient Greece but also told by the Latin Virgilio and Ovid, relives in the red velvet walls of Dorothy Circus Gallery through five beautiful pieces by the American artist Alex Kuno, created specifically for this event. The story deals with the extreme devotion of Orpheus, the poet who dived into the Underworld to get his wife back to life. It is therefore a story of rescue, the myth of a love that is so strong it can heal and keep one alive. The eternity of this myth intertwines with the eternity of a sentiment that goes beyond death or any other obstacle one may find on his path towards the loved one. The myth is a declaration of the existence of a bound that can forever exist between two people who have the strongest feelings for each other – in this case, Orpheus and Eurydice. Alex Kuno’s panels will highlight the deepest nuances of this story in a new and original way, introducing the artist’s work to the Italian public for the first time.

Alex Kuno, after having received his BFA in Studio Art from the University of Minnesota in 1999, moved to New York to work as a gallery assistant and Art Installer for the American Fine Art and Pat Hearn Art Galleries. After moving back to Minneapolis in 2005, Kuno began playing with the nature of storytelling in his work, as a way to process the uneasy realization that American Exceptionalism is a dangerous and fragile fairy tale. In his works many elements are present, from a fascination with the revisionist history of American military to his love for Northern Renaissance artworks. In his process of creation, Kuno generates a brand new world that, just like the “real” world, appears to be morally ambiguous. The characters of this parallel universe dwell in a fabled dimension, in which the beholder can always find a story told.
Kuno's collections of paintings, drawings, and sculptural installations have been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums throughout the United States, and he regularly produces custom pieces for private clients around the world. He lives and works out of his studio in the Lowertown Arts District in Saint Paul Minnesota, where he co-hosts monthly studio visits and showings of new and in-progress work concurrently with his other exhibits.
