Alina Akbar – Zaahir Aur Batin

-----------------------------------------
(‘Batin - the inward state’ and ‘Zaahir - the outward appearance’).
Exhibition of new works by SACI MFA in Studio Art candidate Alina Akbar. The thematic thread that runs through this body of work is an agile, amorphous style of creating something truly based on “Self” or “Dialogue with the inward (Batin) and outward (Zaahir) self”. The course of self-observation allowed me to discover and uncover the psychological dimensionality of a hu- man mind. It is an exercise of reading myself to understand and decode something intangible. With densely over-layered contour work, I present a transparency but at the same time the il- legibility of my mind – coinciding with and intersecting highly concentrated etchings of vari- ous memories of being rejected and accepted, constructed and deconstructed, admired and attacked, on paper. These drawings are autonomous pieces that are speeches on their own – personal speeches that have transported from the inner to the outer space of being; monumen- tal speeches that have caused trauma and pleasure, incubation of chaos and re nery of order; challenging speeches that have shaken the symmetry of my thoughts - exposing honesty and vulnerability to the world through each stroke and expression with a piercing question: Who owes you an approval?
WORK(IN)SPACE is a new series of exhibition projects by SACI 2nd-Year MFA Candidates in Stu- dio Art, as part of the Professional Practicum Seminar. Students will work directly with SACI’s Maidoff Gallery to critically engage with the challenges offered by preparing an exhibition. Each week a new opening will present a coherent body of work of the artists. Working in a one-to-one relationship with SACI Instructors Daria Filardo and Pietro Gaglianò, students will step outside of their studio environment to rethink their work in an exhibition setting, learning to consider all the aspects, limitations and needs of the given space to achieve the best final result. WORK(IN)SPACE will be held in the Maidoff Gallery and will include all phases of the exhibition, from the planning, to the installation and the opening of the solo show. Visitors are invited to attend the opening of the exhibitions, or visit during opening hours.
