THE OTHERS 2018

Mettere a fuoco l’arte del nuovo millennio richiede lenti per miopi o per presbiti? Il logo sfocato e capovolto, by Ikigai.media, dell’edizione 2018 su campo giallo in stile “lavori in corso”, propone subito un esercizio visivo e più di un interrogativo sulla capacità di visione di cosa sia oggi l’espressività artistica.

The Others vuole essere una lente, o forse un cannocchiale, per individuare l’arte che verrà e scovare nuovi collettori di talenti. Medicale e alternativo anche il luogo scelto, l’ex Ospedale Regina Maria Adelaide in Lungo Dora Firenze 87 a Torino, che dall’ 1 al 4 novembre ospita la manifestazione più underground e irriverente della Contemporary Art Week.

Più di quaranta le gallerie e associazioni culturali presenti quest’anno, due terzi sono straniere, una percentuale praticamente capovolta rispetto al 2017 quando il 65% degli espositori erano italiani, grazie anche al lavoro di ricerca svolto da un board curatoriale rinnovato e dal respiro internazionale, coordinato da Bruno Barsanti. Un gruppo di ambasciatori e globetrotter dell’arte che vivono tra Berlino, Bruxelles, Copenaghen, Mosca, Parigi e Santander e lavorano in tutto il mondo. Sono giovani Alejandro Alonso Diaz, Yulia Belousova, Pietro Della Giustina, Iben Bach Elmstrøm e il collettivo SUPERDEALS e hanno lavorato con The Others con competenza ed entusiasmo.

Novità assoluta la sezioneExpanded Screen , dedicata alla video installazione e con un titolo che fa il verso all’ expanded cinema teorizzato dal critico e accademico americano Gene Youngblood nel 1970. Expanded Screen pone l’accento sul video, ma anche sulla superficie e sulle modalità attraverso cui le immagini diventano fruibili.

Le tredici installazioni della sezione Specifc si misurano con le vecchie sale operatorie, l’area accettazione, la sala d’attesa, gli spazi delle cucine, l’area lavaggio e sterilizzazione per i chirurghi con gli arredi originali. Sempre più variegate le presenze dellamain section e interessantigli special projects che vedono protagonisti artisti di Francia, Paesi Bassi e Danimarca.

La tavola rotonda Beyond the traditional art fair model in programma venerdì 2 novembre dalle 17.30 alle 19.30 ha chiamato a raccolta alcuni tra i più innovativi format del settore tra i quali POPPOSITIONS Art Fair (Brussels), Paris Internationale (Paris) Tallin Photomonth, (Tallinn). Connesso al tema della tavola rotonda, lo speed talk Does a gallery need a physical space in 2018? èprevisto sabato 3 novembre dalle ore 19.15 alle 20.00, preceduto dagli incontri intitolati Why is today’s art so meaningless? con inizio alle 17,15 e The future of independent art publishing alle 18,15.

In chiusura di The Others, domenica 4 novembre,verranno assegnati tre premi, uno per ogni sezione:Specific, Expanded Screen e Main; riconfermato il #premiobottegabaretti che accompagna la manifestazione dal 2015.

How has the incredible proliferation of art fairs affected the contemporary art system over the last years? Which are the key factors determining a fair’s identity in the current overcrowded scenario? Is it possible to think of an art fair as a cultural institution? The talk aims at analysing new and emerging art fair models highlighting how they question the traditional format of the commercial exhibition. The concept and structure of a number of young fairs that have distinguished themselves in recent years as the most innovative and responsive to the changing needs will be examined and discussed by the speakers.

Many claim art is dead. Accessibility made art mainstream. Surely, art became integrated in day to day life instagram can replace a museum-visit, online auctions simplifies the holy ritual of art buying into a mouse-klick process. The non-stop production of art fostered by its everyday consumption makes art easy to forget and difficult to keep our attention. But does it make art meaningless?

•The future of independent art publishing –18.15 – 19.00

It’s widely recognised that the digital age has put conventional publishing at stake. And what will be the futures of that physical object as a book or an art magazine and its digital counterparts, and the ways people interact with them? Who is that reader? Are they engaging with textual or infographic knowledge, or a combination of two? And what does that reader want?

•Does a gallery need a physical space in 2018? – 19.15 – 20.00

There is a high number of galleries that had to undergo a closure earlier this year. This doesn’t mean that the gallerists gave up on the art world and emptied their seats. Instead, many of those questioned the traditional gallery model and are experimenting with new ways of selling and working with the artist. Frieze New York no longer requires exhibitors to have a physical gallery space.
