Marisa Albanese – Mind the gap

“Mind the gap!”
From the 5th of October to the 9th of December 2006
The 5th of October the Ciocca Gallery will inaugurate for the first time a solo show of the Neapolitan artist Marisa Albanese, titled “Mind the gap!”.
Acrobati erranti welcomes the audience since his entrance in the gallery: a red line runs along the perimeter of the walls of the exhibition space, drawing a tortuous way that a multitude of little sculptures in clay is covering with acrobatics movements.
The Acrobats are errant man, forced to wander around the heart, to escape to the fractures (Gap) of the contemporary world. Fractures deprive the man from the archetipic tie which prevent him the possibility of having a reference point in which identify himself, in which could read, write and live his identity. The contemporary condition is felt by the artist as a continuos travel from a place to another, or as an infinite waiting in a place that the gap will fill itself.
The Acrobats travel around the heart, they move themselves in contact with it, they are indissolubly bounded to it; from this strong tie derives the choice of a material like clay, unusual for the artist, from that small sculptures, different in their appearance, in their shape, but equal in their substance, such as humanity.
The way continues in the work The White Home, a sculpture made from four wall of bricks painted in white externally, where some small figures are placed on the superior perimeter and they circumscribe the red empty volume.
The theme of the travel comes back in the video installation Passaggi: on three screens are projected the images of young travellers with their baggage, whose body lines come from one screen to another, floating on a white background.
The video installation Mind the gap! ends the show. It’s composed by four television sets placed as the four cardinal points; on each screen are projected images taken from documentaries about homeless people, staggered by black moments; if you move the look from one screen to another you’ll meet the repetition of the same sequence. The composition of the series between repetitions of visions and their gaps (black) takes us to reflect about our perceptions and to ask ourself about their real significance.
The Marisa Albanese calm and essential work finds again its founding themes the crossing, the changing, the energy, here investigated in a reflection about the condition of perennial migration of contemporary individual. The artist faces an almost distressing theme with the usual renounce to expressionist clamours the drama of individual and collective post modern condition is filtered from her rational look.
