Costantino Ciervo – Radical Theories

PRESS RELEASE
On Thursday, January 11, 2007, at 6:00pm, the exhibition “Radical Theories” by the artist Costantino Ciervo (Napoli, 1961) will be opening at the Mudima Foundation in Milan. The exhibition, conceived after a long stay in Asian countries, presents, through the language of art, a political and philosophical observation of globalization phenomena. Just as he did for the production of the video installation “Cogito Ergo Sunt” in Berlin in 1997, Ciervo, in 2006, visits two symbolic megalopolis, Beijing and Shanghai, looking for those urban transformations which reflect the current global reshaping of political, economic, and cultural structures. The progressive disappearance of a cultural identity, an economic policy aimed at affirming only the values of multinational corporations’ profits, the ever increasing decentralization of production, are all highly visible phenomena if one takes a close look at the architecture of large Asian urban conglomerates. Massive skyscrapers, reinforced concrete fortifications, at the bottom of which lie tin shanty towns, slums with dreadful hygienic conditions, the constant hum of the scrambling traffic, are only but a few of the aspects that can also be found in Los Angeles, Mexico City, Cairo, São Paulo and that are introduced by the artist, through innovative forms, in this exhibit. The photographs, the videos and the video installations by Costantino Ciervo will try to convey to the spectator a general view of the transformations towards which the current world is heading, a world in which the power of nations is diminishing (“fortunately” says the artist) and where the political, social, and economic choices are dictated by players outside the nations, who influence every aspect of human life and society.
On the opening day, the performance “Profit” will be re-presented, during which 18 people, casually chosen among the public, will be invited to interact with the works of art. The performance invites reflections upon ethical aspects and possible liberation theories, inherent to the current economic development. It probes into the complex relationship between the necessity for profit to expand its own power and the reaction of the human biosphere which, by nature, opposes any form of hegemony, of standardization, and of control. Andrea Sassi is the exhibit’s curator. A bi-lingual, Italian-English catalogue, edited by the Mudima Foundation, in collaboration with the Dispari&Dispari, Reggio Emilia, with the contributions from the critics Darrow Schecter, Olaf Mueller and Costantino Ciervo, will document the entire cycle of works of art presented at the exhibition.
