Comunicato stampa
Segnala l'evento
Dubois Centre for Pan – African Culture in Accra, Ghana, allora a Kumasi.
Topographies of the Dark

Virginia Ryan
‘Castaways Project’ and ‘Topographies of the Dark’
with the collaboration of Steven Feld.
Between 2003 an 2008, Virginia Ryan produced, at her studio in Accra, Ghana, more than two thousand small ‘sculptural paintings’ collectively titled Castaways. Each of the pieces is a collage composition created from washed-up materials collected along four shorelines along the West Coast. All the works are white-washed, and flicked through with grey-gold, resonant with the colours of foam and sand as the waves break on the very shores from where the inhabitants were once taken and enslaved to build the new world. These Castaways are exhibited as a collective artwork, entire walls/rooms with the pieces hung close together in rows, as if in a continuous wave. In the exhibition at Ottagoni, a smaller selection will be mounted as a site specific installation.
This environment may be accompanied by a continuous ambient surround soundtrack composed by Steven Feld and titled Anomabo Shoreline, Anomabo being one of Ryan's key collection points and an important West African coast slaving center, with the beach as a contact zone, where what washes out and what washes in, can be imagined as a history of the Gold Coast becoming the Black Atlantic.
An additional accompaniment to the installation at Ottagoni is a 15-minute film by Steven Feld, Where Water Touches Land‚ about Ryan's process over the years of collecting the environmental beach data, and transforming it into Castaways in her Accra studio.
The idea behind this multi-media presentation is to create an installation format that emphasizes the power of repetition and number, of places and pasts in the present. The wave-rows of Castaways and continuous in-and-out rolling sound-motions of the beach combine to create a full environment concerned with the memory of gold, slavery, contacts, movement, oceans, beaches, shorelines, people, and displacements. This was particularly resonant in 2007, the 50th anniversary of Ghana’s independence, for which VoxLox published The Castaways Project, consisting of a catalog of Ryan’s art, with Feld’s audio CD and DVD.
The first exhibit of 250 Castaways was held at the W.E.B. Dubois Center for Pan-African Culture in Accra, Ghana, then in Kumasi. In 2007 the Whitworth Gallery, University of Manchester, UK presented 650 Castaways; the exhibit was one of several events in Northern England marking the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery by an act of British Parliament.
In 2008 1,000 were shown as part, with of the solo exhibition ‘ Multiple Entries – Africa and Beyond’ at the GCAM in Spoleto during the 51st Spoleto Festival.
TOPOGRAPHIES OF THE DARK
Ryan’s Topographies of the Dark are created from recycled flip-flops washed up on Accra’s beaches. Like the water rolling in and out along the Black Atlantic coast, these once-worn shoes embody histories of movement and passage, crossings close and far, whilst evoking a contemporary globalised world where cross currents literally carry today’s ‘cast-offs’ from one continent to another.
At Ottagoni, the C.D of the same name will also be presented. The Topographies of the Dark CD similarly tells tales of musical crossings that connect Africa, Europe, and America in the diasporic grooves of jazz improvisation.
Recorded in Santa Fe, New Mexico on the occasion of Accra Trane Station’s first visit from Ghana to the U.S., in 2008, Topographies of the Dark is a musical exploration in dialogue with the sculptural paintings Ryan’s textured assemblages in overlaying densities of black are featured in the accompanying booklet. It was released in 2008
