Galleria Six è lieta di annunciare una mostra di opere su carta di Terry Atkinson dal 1962 al 2025.
In mostra una selezione di 25 opere da quelle realizzate nel 1961-62, durante gli anni di frequenza alla Slade School of Art dell'UCL di Londra, sino a quelle realizzate negli ultimi anni, attraversando varie decadi di intensa pratica artistica e teorica.

" Le varie narrazioni presenti nella serie di disegni degli ultimi dieci anni hanno cercato di seguire una serie di eventi politici contemporanei. Pertanto, devo dire che l’ attuale situazione della politica europea non mi ha colto di sorpresa. Spesso ho seguito gli eventi precedenti già da molti anni prima. Ad esempio, ho notato l’espansione della NATO da parte dell’ amministrazione Clinton soprattutto nei Paesi baltici e, prima ancora, i bombardamenti della stessa amministrazione su Belgrado per settanta giorni o più. Ho notato Victoria Nuland che distribuiva gadget durante il colpo di Stato di Maidan a Kiev nel 2014 e molti altri dettagli delle attività dell’ MI6 e della CIA nell’Europa centrale negli ultimi due decenni.
Di conseguenza, non sono stato affatto sorpreso dall’ invasione dell’Ucraina da parte della Federazione Russa. La tecnica semplice del disegno è stata una scelta essenziale e relativamente veloce per seguire, commentare e rappresentare le mie reazioni a questo tipo di eventi. [...]
Poche settimane dopo l’incursione di Hamas in Israele, durante il mostruoso bombardamento a tappeto israeliano su Gaza, ho visto e ascoltato un soldato semplice dell’ IDF proclamare con sicurezza, in quello che mi sembra di aver riconosciuto come un accento di Brooklyn, che Israele stava difendendo la cultura occidentale – la mia risposta a quella affermazione, allora come oggi, è che se Israele sta davvero difendendo la cultura occidentale, allora la cultura occidentale non vale la pena di essere difesa.
Penso al libro davvero eccezionale di Mark Mazower, The Dark Continent.
Considero Mazower uno dei più importanti storici occidentali.
Per qualsiasi artista occidentale il libro di Mazower dovrebbe essere un campanello d’ allarme.
Vedo questi disegni dell’ ultimo decennio intrecciati a quella che ritengo essere la narrazione brillantemente descritta e deprimente di The Dark Continent ".

Galleria Six is pleased to announce an exhibition of works on paper by Terry Atkinson spanning the years 1962 to 2025.
The exhibition features a selection of 25 works, ranging from those created in 1961–62, during his time at the Slade School of Art at UCL in London, to those produced in recent years, covering several decades of intense artistic and theoretical practice.
" The various narratives in the drawing series of the last ten years have attempted to tracka number of contemporary political events. Thus, this is to state the current condition of European politics have not taken me by surprise. Often, I have tracked the prior events for many years beforehand. For example, I noted the Clinton administration expanding NATO into especially the Baltic States, and before that the same administration bombing Belgrade for seventy days or more. I noted Victoria Nuland giving out goodies in the Maidan coup d’ etat in Kyiv in 2014, and many other details of MI6/CIA activity in Central Europe during the last two decades. Consequently, I was not at all surprised by the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine. The lightweight tech of drawing has been an essential and relatively speedy choice in tracking, commenting and representing my reactions to these kinds of events. [...]
A few weeks after The Hammas raid into Israel during the monstrous Israeli carpet bombing of Gaza, I saw and listened to an IDF foot soldier confidently proclaiming, in what I think I recognized as a Brooklyn accent, that Israel was defending Western culture – my response to that claim, was then and is now, if Israel is indeed defending Western culture, then Western culture is not worth defending.
I think of Mark Mazower’s quite outstanding book The Dark Continent.
I regard Mazower as one of the paramount Western historians. For any Western artist Mazower’s book ought to be a tocsin.
I view these drawings of the past decade as interwoven into what I argue to be Dark Continent’s brilliantly accounted and depressing narrative ".
