Falò galleggianti che bruciano dal tramonto a mezzanotte, fluttuanti sulle acque del Tevere, accompagnati da musiche e coreografie: avremo modo di assistere a questo e molto altro in WATERFIRE, il grande spettacolo di arte pubblica, in programma venerdì 21 e sabato 22 settembre a Roma, tra Ponte Sisto e Ponte Mazzini sulle rive del Tevere.

L’evento d’arte, ideato e diretto dall’artista americano Barnaby Evans, sarà presentato con le performance di teatro ambientale MOVEABLE SPACE, della coreografa Linda Foster, nonché una reiterazione di CHANCE ENCOUNTER, di Robert Hammond.

L’iniziativa, organizzata da Pino Fortunato e con la partnership di TEVERETERNO Onlus, si presenta come un’installazione e una straordinaria cerimonia urbana dedicata alle città d’acqua, con lo scopo di rivalorizzare e trasformare in maniera creativa le aree fluviali.

WaterFire fu organizzato per la prima volta da Barnaby Evans nella città di Providence (Rhode Island, USA) diciotto anni fa. Da allora ha guadagnato tanta popolarità da ergersi a trampolino di lancio per molte altre forme di arte. Ripetuto stagionalmente per sette mesi senza pause, è diventato la principale attrazione dell’intero Stato, con oltre dieci milioni di spettatori. Proprio di recente l'opera si è aggiudicata il prestigioso premio Art Place America.

Si tratta di una vera e propria iniziativa di “community-based art”, in cui il pubblico è attivamente partecipe e protagonista. Grazie agli ottimi risultati ottenuti, negli ultimi anni l'artista ha apportato delle modifiche a WaterFire adattandolo ad altre città degli Stati Uniti, oltre che a Singapore, con l’ambizione di ottenere gli stessi straordinari risultati sociali, culturali ed economici sul tessuto urbano coinvolto.

WaterFire ha un impatto travolgente. Acqua e fuoco sono il cuore dell’installazione, con una giustapposizione deliberata degli elementi simbolo della vita e della comunità fin dall'antichità. Lo spettacolo è un’esperienza sinestetica e ha l’effetto di un suggestivo rito tribale dell'età contemporanea.

La semplicità e la bellezza magica dei fuochi scoppiettanti riflessi nell’acqua creano infatti un’atmosfera incantata e tranquilla e un profondo senso di pace, condivisione e comunità.
La manifestazione arriva per la prima volta in Europa ed è ospitata nella Capitale, tra Ponte Sisto e Ponte Mazzini, a “Piazza Tevere”, uno spazio che l’Associazione Tevereterno Onlus, fondata dall’artista Kristin Jones, ha ridefinito come una “piazza virtuale”, dedicandola all’arte contemporanea e invitando grandi artisti a realizzare qui lavori site-specific con l’obiettivo di riqualificare l'area attraverso attività culturali programmate.

WaterFire Roma è realizzato con il sostegno di Roma Capitale - Assessorato alle Politiche Culturali e Centro Storico e grazie al contributo de Il Gioco del Lotto e GTech – controllata di Lottomatica Group, rientra nell'ambito della programmazione dell'Estate Romana e gode del Patrocinio dell’American Accademy in Rome.

WaterFire Roma è prodotto da Fortunato Productions e Associazione Art For Promotion, grazie al supporto tecnico di Bio-Energy Srl per la fornitura di legna riciclata, di Barani Group per i servizi di sicurezza, di Show On Social Network della Danza per le riprese video e al Molinari Art Center per l'utilizzo gratuito delle sale prova.

Brilliant bonfires burning from sunset to midnight, floating just above the waters of the Tiber, accompanied by music and dance: that and much more will be offered in “WATERFIRE”, a public art installation that will take place on Friday, September 21 and Saturday, September 22 in Rome, between Ponte Sisto and Ponte Mazzini on the Trastevere side.

The art work was first conceived by the American artist Barnaby Evans and is presented with a performance of environmental theater “MOVEABLE SPACE” by the choreographer Linda Foster and a re-iteration of Robert Hammond’s CHANCE ENCOUNTER. The initiative is an arts installation and an extraordinary urban ceremony dedicated to the rich lives of cities on the water, with the aim of recovering and creatively transforming the rivers. WaterFire Rome is organized by Pino Fortunato and with the partnership of the Association TEVERETERNO.


WaterFire was first installed by Barnaby Evans in the city of Providence (Rhode Island, USA) eighteen years ago. Since then the art work has also grown to be a forum for the presentation of many forms of art. WaterFire takes place over a seven month season and has become the main attraction of the entire state, with over ten million viewers. Just recently the event has been awarded with one of the prestigious ArtPlace America grants.

WaterFire is a "community-based art" initiative, in which the audience is an active participant and protagonist. Thanks to this thrust, in recent years the artist has created variations of WaterFire in other U.S. cities, as well as in Singapore, with the aim of stimulating the same positive social, cultural and economic benefits for the urban spaces and rivers involved.

WaterFire has an overwhelming impact. Water and fire are the heart of the installation, with a deliberate juxtaposition of the elements which have always been the symbol of life and community ever since ancient times. The show is a synaesthetic experience and has the effect of a contemporary tribal rite. The magical simplicity and beauty of crackling fires reflected in the water create an enchantingly peaceful atmosphere as well as a sense of calm and serenity, sharing and community.

WaterFire comes for the first time to Europe in this ancient city, between Ponte Sisto and Ponte Mazzini, an area also known as “Piazza Tevere”, that the Association TEVERETERNO Onlus - founded by artist Kristin Jones - has set up as a virtual square. This piazza is now dedicated to contemporary art, allowing great artists to create site-specific works here with the aim of upgrading the area through planned cultural activities.

WaterFire Rome, realized with the support of the City of Rome - Department of Cultural Affairs and Historical Center, thanks to the Sponsorship of Il Gioco del Lotto and GTech – Lottomatica Group subsidiary, not only is part of the cultural programming of the Roman summer, but also enjoys the patronage of the American Academy in Rome.
