Nico Vascellari

Who was I?
Rhetoric question.
It’s always me. By surviving things I also abandon them.
I look at you with a certain interest. I follow everything you say without listening to the single words.
I would prefer if you didn’t dwell on flattery.
It’s only because you’re there that I managed to talk to you like you speak to a man.
Of course! But I could swear that from the moment this conversation began you haven’t stopped filling that glass
and looking the other way.
Are you scared?
I suppose you are.
But no, don’t fear. We’ll come too, you know? I even think there will be a long sustained note. Some fluttering from
fifth to fifth and two or three embellishments. You deserve them.

April 6, 1896. Athens. In 1894, after organizing a congress to promote his idea, the French Baron Pierre Fredi de
Coubertin starts off the modern Olympic Games.
The participants, ready to compete in athletics, cycling, gymnastics, wrestling, swimming, fencing, weightlifting, tennis
and shooting, have one thing in common: they breathe the sport, they embrace a passion to which they don’t
try to give names or an explanation. Indeed they’re not even real athletes , but rather sailors, employees, students
and people who practice the sport as a hobby. Among the ranks are even some tourists, driven to join the games
by pure enthusiasm.
November 21, 2009. Perarolo di Cadore. Opening of perarolo09. Five artists take turns in an uninterrupted handing
off of the baton, from November to March, generating an art relay, that sneaks, penetrates, moves, and flows with
its own logic and dynamics, moving towards unpredictable results.
