The 24th edition of ART INNSBRUCK is preparing a great special show by the British-Cypriot artist John Kiki.
Hang on to your own vision, never give up and carry on relentlessly.
With this personal attitude and individual preference, Johanna Penz established the first international art fair in western Austria 25 years ago, and has turned it into a popular and controversial fixed point on the regional fair and event calendar.
With the same persistence and consistency, she managed this nerve-racking year of crisis, organised and conducted the third edition of the ART Salzburg Contemporary and she prepared her traditional hometown fair, the ART Innsbruck. Likewise, her regular exhibitors have remained true: one and a half months before the appointed term from 16 to 20 of January 2020, the 24th ART Innsbruck is booked best for many years. “We have always been different from other art fairs, as we are more colourful, multifarious, glamorous – this was something that has always been an issue of dispute. But now it has been shown and proven that this is exactly what our exhibitors, artists and visitors appreciate and love about the Art Innsbruck.”
When her long-term partners and friends expressed their unshakeable loyalty, this was what gave her and her team a boost, says Penz. “By offering a unique and amazing fair program, we will reward all those who encouraged us and those who didn’t believe in us will see that the ART Innsbruck is still a lively and vigorous event.”
This year’s special show is dedicated to John Kiki, who perfectly represents the focus of the ART Innsbruck. Kiki’s art is unique and unmistakable, a mix of figurative painting, abstraction and pop art. As a partner for this show, Penz was able to engage the WOS gallery – by the way, an alliance of the three renowned Swiss gallerists and art dealers Daniel Wahrenberger, Claudius Ochsner und Thomas Schafflützel, who fascinated the visitors of the Art Salzburg Contemporary in September with their impressing special show dedicated to Pablo Picasso, the grandmaster of modernism. WOS owns the worldwide biggest collection of this extraordinary artists originating from Cyprus, who studied among other places at the Camberwell School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools, and exhibited his works at hotspots like the Royal Academy, the Hayward Gallery, the Serpentine Galleries as well as the OK Harris Gallery in Soho, New York. Kiki, born in 1943, finds his inspiration above all in ancient mythology, but also in closely observing his fellow human beings and their actions.
Apart from the established big names of national and international modern art, like Niki de Saint-Phalle, Roy Lichtenstein, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Christian Ludwig Attersee, Kiki Kogelnik and Hermann Nitsch, the 24th ART Innsbruck will present a lot of promising talents of a younger generation, who are just about to start their careers. The Hartl gallery of Vienna has announced to exhibit works of the renowned Tyrolean artist Herbert Danler, who died in 2011. And Penz is particularly delighted about the participation of a gallery from Cape Town that will present South African art.
