Aron Demetz – Disegni e sculture
ARON DEMETZ
Drawings and sculptures
Margini Art Gallery is thrilled to introduce the works of sculptor Aron Demetz. This exhibition is a sort of retrospective which will guide the visitor through the three fundamental stages of Demetz's artistic journey.
Demetz's first most refined and very delicate works are centred on the human figure accurately reproduced, but whose anatomical contour is softened by the colour spread on wood with light and 'watery' tones . These portraits catch their protagonists' inner thoughts, expressed more through their clichè posture than their physiognomical gestures, such as the red-headed teenager with pimples and the wrinkled shirt or the boy walking in his sleep that visitors will be able to see at the gallery. Besides, the sculptures of this first stage show his ability in fixing the separation between body and soul, moments in which sight gets 'blurred' and we are, at the same time, distintinctively only matter and only spirit. The titles of each work are essential communications, as footnotes on a manuscript.
Later from 2005 to 2007, the artist synthetizes real people into symbols, that is, men become 'the man', the archetype through a 'purifying process' that will take the beholder into the essentials.
Works as 'within' or 'purification' or the sketch 'inner life' are spiritual and ethereal forms that have replaced Demetz's first sculptures whose typology have evolved into a transcendental dimension. The delicate colouring of the first works, still present in the above cited works, will yield to silver or aluminium leafs either spread evenly on wood, or spread as uneven blocks or intertwined, just like the leafs. The skin starts a metamorphosis often mirroring ('feeling') itself.
The artist who at first was the external narrator is now inside the bodies, undresses them in order to transform them into fluid, inconsistent anatomy. Even the titles are impersonal and epigraphic , take the work 'spine', a synecdoche for the body. The reflection leads to a wider involvement for the viewers who will recognize both themselves and their universal need tending to the sublime.
The drawings run through the artist's whole work: a sculptor's idea has to be translated somehow and therefore 'betrayed' in the compromise with the materials but above all in the time spent for creating the work in its third dimension. On the contrary, the drawing allows Demetz to seize the moment and us to catch a more intimate dimension of his creations.
This last year has opened the door to a new upsetting element: natural resin oozed from trees and modelled on the sculpture only roughly sketched on wood. The resin is the oil on the pencil that by covering the graphic sign creates a poetic and lyrical filter; it runs on the wood of the artist's most recent works. The resin gives the impression of secreting at any time and only the emotional tension or some sort of painful sutured wound keeps it from flowing. In a reversal of condition the bodies move from ethereal to definitely concrete, arrogant, annoying to our sight. These souls keep alive charred, hairless, deseased-stricken, skinnned bodies. Their piercing look is not desperate, but penetrating, it carries awareness. The flesh is heavy but the anatomy is streched out, protruded. Seams are not functional but poetic, they represent sutures just as those resin creates to mend the tree's wounds and give life to new bark. The tree's blood generates brand new forms as well as Demetz generates a more organic artistic result. Titles are useless now.
The artist is brought back to the original tree since the dialectic between body and soul, man and divinity, spiritual and metaphysical has lead him to consider the body as the Platonic prison of the soul where the desire of becoming pure spirit is restrained. The only possible transformation left is to again become trees. The anatomy projects itself like branches making the body lose firmness and bleed resin. Our first impression is of repulsion but we are forced to look at these shapes over and over again because we understand them; we want to come across their penetrating ,determined glance.
Biografia.
Aron Demetz (1972, Vipiteno).
