The Gallery Apart è orgogliosa di inaugurare la stagione espositiva 2013-14 con la mostra Still here di Gea Casolaro, il lavoro sviluppato dall’artista durante il periodo di residenza nell’atelier degli Incontri Internazionali d’Arte presso La Cité Internationale des Arts di Parigi.

Still here è un progetto legato a tal punto con la vita di Gea Casolaro da spingerla a trasformare la Capitale transalpina in sua città di elezione, in una sorta di esilio volontario causato dalla sua incapacità ad adattarsi al contesto socio-politico italiano dell’ultimo ventennio. L’essere straniera in una città che non conosceva, se non da turista, e la realtà dello sradicamento in un nuovo paese hanno spinto sin dall’inizio Casolaro a fare i conti con l’assenza di un’esperienza vissuta e dunque di una memoria che l’ancorasse alla nuova realtà dei luoghi in cui si trovava a vivere.

Parigi è la città dove è stato girato il più alto numero di film rispetto ad ogni altra città del mondo, è la città dove cinema e fotografia hanno mosso i primi passi, è dunque la città della luce oltre che dei Lumi, la Ville lumière dove gli esperimenti cinematografici dei fratelli Lumière vennero per la prima volta proiettati.

Attraverso la visione di centinaia di film girati nella capitale francese, a cui si alternavano ampi percorsi a piedi in lungo e in largo per i quartieri parigini, Casolaro ha creato la propria memoria di quei luoghi, dotandosi di ricordi non vissuti direttamente ma introiettati attraverso le storie dei personaggi dei film, attraverso la visione dei loro autori, una memoria che le ha reso familiari molti scorci della città, fino agli angoli più nascosti, vedendoli trasformare nel tempo sotto i suoi occhi ed imparando così a conoscere la città come se vi avesse vissuto da anni.

Un percorso di memoria personale e collettiva quello di Still here, reso possibile dall’attraversamento della città non solo fisico ma anche storico grazie al ricorso a pellicole che coprono circa cento anni di cinema, un attraversamento che riattualizza quella prerogativa tipicamente parigina della flânerie, esaltata da Baudelaire, analizzata da Benjamin e poi rinnovata da Debord nell’accezione di “deriva”. Still here è quindi, anzitutto, un lavoro sulla totale fusione tra arte e vita: su come sia possibile radicarsi in un luogo in cui non si ha un’esperienza storica personale, modificando l’ostilità di una città sconosciuta in familiarità, in legami sociali, in memoria personale. Casolaro usa il cinema perché è l’arte che contiene tutte le altre, per raccontare come la cultura sia un necessario strumento di ancoraggio alla realtà, come l’arte sia un potente mezzo di conoscenza indispensabile per superare i propri confini.

Casolaro ha dedicato al progetto Still here oltre due anni di lavoro, non solo per la mole enorme di film da visionare e di luoghi da scoprire, ma anche perché la memoria individuale e la conoscenza del mondo, non finiscono mai di alimentarsi grazie alle esperienze degli altri, da quelle dei personaggi dei film seguiti passo passo per le strade, a quelle delle persone reali che via via l’artista ha conosciuto e che a loro volta le indicavano i loro film di affezione da inserire nel progetto. Come in altri lavori di Gea Casolaro, anche in Still here emerge quindi l’idea della vita come puzzle, come perenne incontro e innesto tra esistenze, nonché l’idea della fotografia come mezzo per raccontare il mondo in modo plurale e sfaccettato.
Da sempre sensibile alle radici storiche dei luoghi esperiti e attraversati, Casolaro ha spesso fatto ricorso alla ricerca storiografica e alla consultazione di archivi, una pratica adottata da molti artisti contemporanei a fini di ricostruzione di scenari di volta in volta privati o universali, locali o globali. Con Still here, al pari del progetto in mostra attualmente in Lussemburgo, Casolaro sposta l’accento dall’uso di materiali e informazioni desunti da ricerche d’archivio a fini di una mera ricostruzione storica ad un uso finalizzato, invece, alla costruzione di nuovi immaginari collettivi, nuove suggestioni sociali e politiche, nuove memorie individuali e collettive.

Le opere in mostra, disposte su entrambi i piani di esposizione della galleria, sono una selezione delle oltre cento fotografie che compongono Still here e che sono riunite in uno slideshow che consente di godere dell’intero corpus del lavoro ad oggi realizzato. L’artista ha inoltre riprodotto in modo parziale il suo studio parigino, a sottolineare l’importanza di tale luogo di decantazione in cui la grande mappa fisica e quella mentale di Parigi, con le immagini di volta in volta raccolte nei nove mesi di residenza e di vita, venivano sovrapponendosi in un processo di fusione tra realtà e immaginario, esistenza e sogni, territorio e memorie.

The Gallery Apart is pleased to announce the opening of the 2013-14 season with the inaugural exhibition Still Here by Gea Casolaro, a work developed by the artist during her artist-in-residence programme at the atelier of the Incontri Internazionali d’Arte at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.

Still here is a project so deeply related to the life of Gea Casolaro that she has chosen the Transalpine capital as her hometown, in a sort of voluntary exile due to her inability to adapt to the Italian socio-political context of the last twenty years. Being a foreigner in a city she knew only as a tourist, as well as the condition of uprootedness in a new country urged Casolaro from the very beginning to deal with the absence of real experiences and therefore with the lack of a memory that made her feel related to the new places she chose to live in.

Compared to any other city in the world, Paris has been the set of so many movies, it is the city where cinema and photography have taken the first steps, thus it is also the city of light, not only of the Age of enlightenment, the Ville lumière where the early motion pictures by the Lumière Brothers got screened for the very first time.

After watching hundreds movies shot in the French capital, and strolling the length and breadth of Paris boroughs, Casolaro has created her own memory of those places, providing herself with memories she personally never got to live but which she somehow has made their own through the stories of the characters of the movies, through the vision of their creators, a memory that got her closer to the several views of the city, even the most secret places, witnessing their transformation through time and therefore getting to know the city as if she had lived there for many years.

Still here is a path of both personal and collective memory, made possible by a physical as well as a historical journey through the city, by resorting to movies covering over one hundred years of cinema, a journey that renews that typically Parisian prerogative of the flânerie, introduced by Baudelaire, critically analysed by Benjamin and then redefined by Debord as related to the concept of “dérive”. Hence Still here is first of all a work on the total union between art and life: on how it is possible to settle in a place where we do not have a personal historical experience, transforming the hostility of an unknown city into familiarity, into social relationships, into personal memory. Casolaro exploits the cinema as a form of art that includes all the others, in order to describe how culture is a necessary tool of anchorage to reality, how art is a powerful means of knowledge which is necessary to go beyond one’s limits.

Casolaro has dedicated to the project Still here over two years, not only for the bulk of movies to introject and of places to be discovered, but also because the personal memory and the knowledge of the world are consistently fuelled thanks to the experiences lived by others, by the characters of the movies followed step by step through the Parisian streets, to those of the real people that the artist got to know and who also recommended their favorite movies to be included in the project. Like in other works by Gea Casolaro, the idea of life as a puzzle also emerges in Still Here, as an ongoing encounter and exchange between existences, along with the idea of the photography as a means to depict the world in a plural and multifaceted way.

The exhibited works, arranged on the two gallery’s exhibition floors, are a selection of the over one hundred pictures that compose Still Here. A slideshow featuring the entire corpus of the images produced by the artist is screened on the ground floor of the gallery, whereas in the hall is a partial reproduction of the artist’s Parisian studio in order to highlight the relevance of this place of decantation, where the big physical and mental map of Paris featuring those images collected over the nine months of the artist-in-residence programme and of her days spent in the city, started to overlap in an absolute work of fusion between reality and imaginaries, life and dreams, territory and memories.
