Michele Taricco – Memorie Strappate
Michele Taricco was born in Trieste in 1927. He showed an immediate interest in drawing and painting and, as a self-taught artist, has devoted his entire life to solitary research. With his innate talent, Taricco started with classic realism, progressing through a surrealist phase, to hyperrealism. His works feature extreme perfection, a targeted desire to highlight the light, substance and poetry of everyday life. His subjects are always objects that we commonly use and he pays particular attention to the knowledge of our daily habits: the extremely accurate reality proposed by Taricco shows us aspects of an everyday life experienced. His well-deserved fame was achieved in the 1970s with paintings of wagons, cars, bicycles parked in lonely streets, torn posters announcing events long-since over, windows overlooking the washing hung out to dry in the sun, plastic bags and old glass bottles. These themes have accompanied him throughout his whole artistic career. He shows his works in France, Germany and all of Northern Europe, exporting a poetic vision of the Italian artistic culture: a vocation for silence and the beauty of little things. Undisputed witness of his time, he paints freehand only, avoiding the use of any technical tricks. A reserved artists, who steers well clear of social events and applause, he has been distinguished by his pursuit of “perfection” in an ethical manner, characterised by constant research, in which he has invested greatly and to which he has dedicated his whole life. He is still working and, using his own personal artisan technique, has always had the courage to portray his reality and his concept of still life. A Master who is currently the unquestionable protagonist of a certain way of creating art, marked by the slow pace and poetic observation of reality, where the contemplation of detail and all things marginal, lacking adornment, becomes a choice of immense aesthetic value. Since 1997, he has worked exclusively with the Gagliardi Gallery in San Gimignano. His works are present in private and public collections, as well as in museums, and have been subject to numerous significant articles by critics. From 1972 to the present day, he has shown his works in prestigious galleries and important artistic events: abroad, at the Basel Art Fair, Morges, Geneva, Brussels, Bonn, Paris, Grenoble, Neuchâtel, New York, Miami, Quito (Ecuador), Tel Aviv, Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) and Dubai; in Italy in Padua, Ferrara, Reggio Emilia, Bologna Art Fair, Rimini, San Gimignano, Rome and Taormina.
..Taricco’s most recent works can be traced back to a series of “tears”, subjects that the painter had already happily tackled in the first half of the 1970s and which he now reinvents, further defining his poetics and his relationship, never interrupted but always reinterpreted, with American Photorealism.
..If we observe Taricco’s “tears” of today (on an equal footing with every subject portrayed by him), we no longer see the self-satisfied desire to amaze, the original and arrogantly fantastic mannerism of his youth, but that tendency towards optical illusion, which was triggered by an enthusiasm that dominated over an expressivity full of lyricism. Among all the paintings, those of yesterday and those of today, but particularly these retinoically memorable “tears”, there has been the growth, evolution and expressive maturity of an artist who has painted all his life, making his time coincide with that of his painting. The struggle to improve technically merged with sentiment, warmth and invention. From the impossible portrayal of surreal invention, Taricco was catapulted into the most visible reality, later (over a period of forty years) reconquering the wonder of invention and, primarily, coming to grips with that modernity that does not belong to a preformed ideology which, being unique and inimitable, originated from his sensitivity, his history and, above all, his life.
