"I'll be your mirror", breve film prodotto dalla BBC nel 1995, è ancora oggi considerato uno dei documenti più articolati e precisi sulla storia personale e sul lavoro dell'artista statunitense Nan Goldin, che ne curò personalmente la regia, in collaborazione con l'amico di sempre David Armstrong e il documentarista inglese Edmund Coulthard.
La pellicola ricostruisce l'intera carriera dell'artista, dai suoi esordi nei primi anni '70 fino alla metà degli anni '90, periodo in cui si affaccerà potentemente sulla scena artistica internazionale, proponendosi come una delle figure più influenti in ambito fotografico e non solo. A quegli anni, infatti, risale la sua prima importante retrospettiva di mezza carriera, ospitata dal Withney Museum of American Art, mostra che la consacrerà definitivamente sulla scena contemporanea, garantendole una popolarità di pubblico e critica che ancora oggi non ha eguali tra gli artisti viventi.
Il film può essere considerato come una sorta di riuscito prolungamento del suo lavoro, fondato com'è sulla viva voce degli amici più intimi e dei protagonisti dei suoi scatti più celebri, conservando in ciò una rara freschezza di documento di vita e di dialogo sincero tra le parti.
Bruce Balboni, David Armstrong, Greer Langkton e molti altri raccontano in dettaglio e con un'umanità sorprendente la loro amicizia con l'artista, permettendoci uno sguardo disincantato e realistico dietro le quinte dell'opera d'arte, sguardo spesso giocato su toni volutamente sentimentali e malinconici.
"I'll be your mirror" è un'opera di Nan Goldin a tutti gli effetti, e della Goldin conserva l'ironia e il romanticismo, trasportandoci in un'epoca conflittuale e drammatica.
Nan stessa, come una sorta di Virgilio moderno, ci accompagna passo passo dai suoi esordi bostoniani alla esuberante New York degli anni '70 e '80, ci racconta in prima persona il dramma di un'intera generazione segnata dall'AIDS e dalla droga e ci accompagna tra le pieghe della controcultura giovanile di quegli anni, tra abusi, illusioni, grandi sogni e altrettanto grandi sconfitte.
L'opera autobiografica – il cui titolo è preso in prestito dal brano di Lou Reed - combinando riprese video e fotografie, racconti e interviste, come un diario immerge gli spettatori nei colori tenui che contraddistinguono il lavoro della Goldin, facendoli partecipi di un lungo e doloroso viaggio che ha sullo sfondo le musiche di The Velvet Underground, Patti Smith, Television e Eartha Kit.
È un breve film dal valore straordinario di documento intimo, utile più di tante parole nel restituirci la vita e il pensiero di un grande artista, ma anche il nitido ritratto di una generazione e la temperie e i fermenti di un'intera epoca, a noi così vicina, ma al tempo stesso così lontana nei modi e nelle energie intellettuali in gioco.
Lo struggente ritratto della vita e dell’opera di Nan Goldin è stato presentato al Festival Internazionale di Edimburgo e al Berlino Film Festival e ha vinto il Premio Speciale della Giuria al Prix Italia e il Premio come Miglior Documentario al Montreal Festival of Films and Art.
Il documentario verrà presentato nella sua versione originale in inglese con sottotitoli in italiano.

Nan Goldin è nata a Washington nel 1953, ed è cresciuta a Boston, dove ha frequentato la School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Vive a New York dal 1978, dove si afferma negli anni ’80 e ’90 come una dei maggiori esponenti di un’arte che ha rifiutato formalismi astratti e concettuali in favore di una identificazione totale con la vita, attraverso una completa immersione nelle culture delle minoranze sessuali e sociali. Gli eccessi di alcool, droga, amore e sesso, le relazioni etero e omosessuali, la costruzione delle identità sessuali nelle serie fotografiche dedicate alle sue amicizie nelle comunità delle drag queens di Boston e New York si alternano nella sua opera a immagini disarmanti che non risparmiano i momenti di maggiore vulnerabilità personale.
La violenta irruzione dell’AIDS nel corso degli anni ’80, che ha sconfitto molti degli anti-eroi protagonisti delle fotografie dell’artista, ha acuito il senso di perdita che caratterizza numerose sue immagini, ma anche la loro valenza sociale e politica: come attivista di Act Up, la Goldin ha organizzato la prima grande mostra sull’AIDS a New York nel 1989 e ha fatto parte del gruppo Visual Aids, che promosse la giornata mondiale sull’AIDS del primo dicembre. Negli ultimi anni, Nan Goldin ha rivolto il proprio occhio ad altre culture alternative o “irregolari”, come il mondo della prostituzione nelle Filippine o i giovani protagonisti della ventata di liberazione sessuale in Giappone, forse ricercando, in senso lato, i perduti compagni di strada.

"I'll be your mirror", the short film produced by the BBC in 1995, is held to be one of the most articulate and definitive documents relating to the personal life and the work of the American artist Nan Goldin, who directed the film herself in collaboration with her long term friend David Armstrong and the English documentary maker Edmund Coulthard.The film reconstructs the entire career of the artist, from her beginnings in the early 1970s until the mid 1990s. By this time she had become a key player on the international art scene, one of the most influential figures in the field of photography and beyond. It was in this period that her first important mid-career retrospective was held at the Whitney Museum of American Art, an exhibition that would cement her position on the contemporary scene, where she enjoyed a level of popularity among both the public and critics that has not been equalled to this day by any living artist.The film can be considered as a sort of successful extension of her work, based as it is on the viva voce of her closest friends and of the protagonists of her most famous photographs, making this a biographical documentary of rare freshness, with a sincere rapport between the participants.Bruce Balboni, David Armstrong, Greer Langkton and many others talk in detail, and with a surprising humanity, about their friendship with the artist, allowing us an honest and open glimpse behind the scenes of the art world, a glimpse that often plays on intentionally sentimental and melancholy tones.
To all effects, "I'll be your mirror" is a work by Nan Goldin, with the irony and romanticism that suggests, transporting us to a controversial and dramatic period.
Nan herself, like a sort of modern Virgil, accompanies us step by step, from her Boston origins to the exuberant New York of the 1970s and ‘80s. She leads us, in first person, through the drama of an entire generation scarred by AIDS and drugs, and she accompanies us through the labyrinth of the youth counterculture of those years, with all its abuses and illusions, its grandiose dreams and terrible disappointments.
The autobiographical work - which takes its title from the song by Lou Reed – is almost like a diary. It combines video footage and photographs with stories and interviews to immerse the viewer in the delicate colours which distinguish Goldin’s work, inviting him on a long and sometimes painful journey played out against the background music of The Velvet Underground, Patti Smith, Television and Eartha Kit.
It is a short film of extraordinary value as an intimate document, more useful than any number of words in presenting the life and thinking of a great artist, but it is also a vivid portrait of a generation and the climate and turmoil of an entire era, so near to us, but at the same time so far away in terms of the intellectual energies and manners in play.
This powerful portrait of the life and work of Nan Goldin has been screened at the Edinburgh International Festival and at the Berlin Film Festival, and it won the Special Jury Prize at the Prix Italia and the Prize for Best Documentary at the Montreal Festival of Films and Art.
The documentary will be presented in its original version in English with subtitles in Italian.


Nan Goldin was born in Washington in 1953 and grew up in Boston, where she went to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. She has lived in New York since 1978, where, in the 1980s and 90s she affirmed her position as one of the major exponents of an art which rejected abstract and conceptual formalism in favour of a total identification with life, through a complete immersion in the cultures of sexual and social minorities. The excesses of alcohol, drugs, love and sex, the hetero- and homosexual relationships, the construction of sexual identities in the series of photographs dedicated to her friendships in the drag queen communities of Boston and New York, alternate in her work with disarming images that do not shy away from moments of great personal vulnerability.
The violent eruption of AIDS in the course of the 1980s, which destroyed many of the anti-hero protagonists of the artist’s photographs, sharpens the sense of loss that characterises many of her images, but also highlights their social and political value: as an activist with Act Up, Goldin organised the first great AIDS exhibition in New York in 1989, and she was part of the Visual Aids group, which promotes world AIDS day on the first of December. In recent years, Nan Goldin has turned her eye towards other alternative or “irregular” cultures, such as the world of prostitution in the Philippines, or the young protagonists of the wave of sexual liberation in Japan, perhaps looking for, in a certain sense, something to replace the comrades who have fallen along the way.
