Stefan Bruggemann – Reversed Inverted

La galleria 1/9 unosunove arte contemporanea è lieta di annunciare la prima mostra personale in Italia dell’artista messicano Stefan Brüggemann (1975, Città del Messico).

Stefan Brüggemann lavora con la parola, con il linguaggio e possiede un modo tutto personale di confrontarsi con il testo, in cui combina un approccio di tipo formale e concettuale con un atteggiamento critico, a tratti brutale. Il proposito dell’artista è tanto paradossale quanto provocatorio nella maniera in cui gioca con i codici artistici fino ad arrivare addirittura ad annullarli.

Sette specchi rivolti verso la parete affermano il rifiuto della loro funzione primaria. Nulla può essere riflesso in essi. Nessuna immagine. Nessuna idea. Viene così negata la relazione tra arte e realtà, tra arte e spettatore. Lo specchio inoltre mostra la simultaneità tra opera e spettatore, tra il valore attuale e la consapevolezza della propria presenza del mondo, che qui Stefan Brüggemann sembra svuotare: FROM ANYTHING TO ANYTHING IN NO TIME, egli scrive sulla parete della galleria.

La posizione nichilista si manifesta in modo spesso seducente, intrappolando lo spettatore nella propria cultura artistica. In questo senso egli descrive la sua prassi come “distorto pop concettuale”, associazione completamente paradossale. Il lavoro e la ricerca di Stefan Brüggemann perseguono questo obiettivo incessantemente per permettere a noi stessi di poterci confrontare con la condizione del mondo e della nostra esistenza, quasi come una sorta di indagine sociologica. L’originalità di questo approccio deriva proprio dalla combinazione di tradizionali strategie concettuali con una sensibilità pop.


Stefan Brüggemann vive e lavora tra Londra e Città del Messico. Galleria 1/9 unosunove arte contemporanea is delighted to announce the first solo exhibition in Italy of Mexican artist Stefan Brüggemann (1975, Mexico City).

Stefan Brüggemann works extensively with language, having a very particular way of dealing with text, combining a formal conceptual approach with a rough and critical attitude. Stefan Brüggemann’s proposition is as paradoxical as it is provocative, in the way he plays with artistic codes, the better to reduce them to nothing.

The seven mirrors turned towards the wall echo, as if in the negative, and assert the refusal of their function. Nothing can be reflected in them. No images. No ideas. By reversing the mirror, Stefan Brüggemann denies this relation between art and reality, and art and the viewer. The mirror also shows the simultaneity between work and viewer, present value and value of the conscious presence of the world, which Stefan Brüggemann here seems to empty out: FROM ANYTHING TO ANYTHING IN NO TIME, he writes on the exhibition wall.

The nihilist posture comes across in an often seductive way, ensnaring the spectator in his/her own art culture. In this sense, he describes his praxis as TWISTED CONCEPTUAL POP, an association that is nothing if not paradoxical. Stefan Brüggemann’s work pursues this tack relentlessly, the better to confront us with the logic of the state of the world and existence, like an almost sociological observation. The originality of his approach comes exactly from combining traditional conceptual strategies with a pop sensibility.


Stefan Brüggemann currently lives and works in Mexico City and London.
