Il 19 novembre inaugura Bat Opera 2, una nuova mostra personale di Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, per la seconda volta a Milano alla galleria Massimo De Carlo. Il carnevale di Marvin Gaye Chetwynd è popolato di maschere inquietanti, animali mostruosi, personaggi esuberanti, oggetti onirici: l’artista inglese è una burattinaia che muove i fili di performance anarchiche e surreali, gioiose messe in scena ipnotiche in cui le leggi della natura sono compromesse e scompare ogni regola. Ogni progetto di Marvin Gaye Chetwynd è una porta verso la Tana del Bianconiglio: sospese tra realtà e finzione, le sculture, i quadri, le performance e i film della Chetwynd sono sospesi nello spazio e nel tempo, rivelano le nostre più oscure ossessioni in uno scenario in bilico tra una scenografia teatrale fatta a mano e una seduta psicoanalitica. Le opere di Marvin Gaye Chetwynd affondano le loro radici nella tradizione della sagra popolare: carnevali medioevali, strane danze propiziatorie, ma anche le manifestazioni politiche, sono il terreno su cui l’artista costruisce un mondo opulento con continui riferimenti all’humor nero, alle avanguardie, al racconto gotico e al cinema moderno da Bertold Brecht a John Milton, da Jabba the Hutt al Cat Bus di matrice miyazakiana. In Bat Opera 2 Marvin Gaye Chetwynd presenta un nuovo corpo eterogeneo di lavori con i quali prosegue la sua indagine sull’incubo di ogni bambino: il pipistrello. Da molti anni l’artista lavora a un ciclo di quadri intitolati Bat Opera in cui è centrale la figura del mammifero notturno ritratto ossessivamente in dipinti grotteschi dal gusto barocco che sembrano arrivare dalle segrete di un castello inglese. Diverse sculture e oggetti di scena del puppet film presentato a Le Consortium di Digione durante la mostra Almanach 14 popolano il piano superiore della galleria e sono accompagnate dalla proiezione di Hermitos Children 2. Il film è il seguito di Hermitos Children del 2008 e prende la forma di un dramma criminale il cui protagonista è il detective Joan Shipman alla prese con la risoluzione di crimini e in cui sequenze cinematografiche si alternano a riprese di esibizioni dal vivo. Con l’utilizzo dei più diversi media Marvin Gaye Chetwynd è capace di traghettare lo spettatore in un mondo di quadri esplosi, di forme surreali, di tableaux vivants, in cui figure iconiche decontestualizzate, attori amatoriali e ballerini trasformano il reale in una grande parata carnevalesca. Marvin Gaye Chetwynd (che ha cambiato varie volte il suo nome trasformandolo da Lali a Spartacus e infine in Marvin Gaye) è nata a Londra nel 1973, città in cui vive e lavora. L’artista inglese ha esposto con mostre personali in prestigiose istituzioni come lo Studio Voltaire a Londra (2014); Nottingham Contemporary a Nottingham (2014); la Tate Britain a Londra (2012); il New Museum of Contemporary Art di New York (2011); Le Consortium di Dijon (2008). The 19th of November will see the opening of the new solo show Bat Opera 2 by the English artist Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, that returns to exhibit in Massimo De Carlo’s Milan gallery for the second time. The carnivalesque world of Marvin Gaye Chetwynd is inhabited by uncanny masques, monstrous animals, exuberant characters and dreamlike objects. It is in this outer world context that the artist acts as a puppeteer that through her actions creates anarchic and surreal performances: joyous and hypnotic mis en scene where every rule as we know it disappears. Every one of Marvin Gaye Chetwynd’s projects is like a door that opens on the dreamlike home of Carool’s famous character the white rabbit. Her sculptures, canvases and performances are afloat between reality and fiction, time and space: shedding light on the most obscure of our obsessions by creating a scenario suspended between a theatre set and an appointment with a psychoanalyst. The works of Marvin Gaye Chetwynd are deeply rooted into folk traditions and happenings: medieval carnivals, propitiatory dances and also political demos. It is on this terrain that the artists constructs an opulent world that references continuously to black humor, avangarde, gothic literature and modern cinema such as that of Bertold Brecht and John Milton passing through cult characters such as Star War’s Jabba the Hutt or Miyazaki’s Cat Bus. In Bat Opera 2 the artist presents a new and heterogeneous body of work that aims to explore one of every child’s worst fears: the bat. It has been many years since the artist started working on a series of canvases titled Bat Opera, here the night creature is portrayed obsessively in grotesque paintings that have a very baroque touch: they seem to arrive from the dungeons of an old English castle. On the upper level of the gallery there is a selection of sculptures and objects that are taken from the set of the puppet film that was presented at Le Consortium in Dijon during the exhibition Almanach 14. On this floor it is also possible to see the film Hermitos Children 2: it is the sequel of Hermitos Children and takes the shape of a criminal drama where the main character is the detective Joan Shipman, who has to solve crimes where scenes from films alternate to footage from live performances. Through the usage of different medias Marvin Gaye Chetwynd is able to escort the viewer into a journey made of exploded canvases, surreal forms and tableaux vivants where iconic figures are decontextualized and amateur actors and dancers transform reality into one big carnival parade. Marvin Gaye Chetwynd (who has changed her names many times passing from Lali to Spartacus and now Marvin Gaye) was born in London in 1973, city where she now lives and works in.
