Giallo alla Biennale, morto il commissario del padiglione messicano

Ma la Biennale che cosa dice? c’e un comunicato almeno? e il gazzettino di venezia e la stampa italiana?…per quelli che siamo stati li durante il vernissage della biennale e al padiglione del messico la notizia è allucinante, ma c’è stato un patto di silenzio omertoso?!

ma tutto questo mi sembra cosi strano. Se alla biennale io do un pugno a qualcuno, l’indomani sono su tutti i giornali. Qui muore un curatore e la stampa non pubblica niente. I giornali messicani sanno poco o nulla, si sa solo che sarà cremato e riportato a casa ????? ma ce un reperto medico? e la polizia ? E la cosa più strana ancora e che la Biennale non dica niente…

Sono sconvolto! Come si fa a sapere di più?

Dear Exibart, apologies for replying in English. I am writing to clarify exactly what happened with regard to this tragedy.

My good friend and curator Priamo Lozada accidentally fell from the balcony of his apartment in Canareggio on the morning of the 28th of May. His apartment was shared with two Mexican colleagues, both of whom where asleep when the accident took place. He was taken to hospital where he underwent several surgical interventions. The original diagnosis was that he only had about 30 per cent chance of recovery. His family arrived in Venice right away. After a few days in intensive care and more surgery the doctors reported improvements, to the extent that they increased the chances for his recovery to 70 per cent. At the Mexican Pavilion we monitored this improvement closely and the decision to go ahead with the opening events was in direct relation to that improvement. Yes, we did have great opening parties, –just as Priamo planned for us to have–, and his absence was honoured in the opening speeches, where we solemnly declared our desire for his prompt recovery.

Alas, on the 13th of June, contrary to the hopeful words we had been hearing from the doctors for ten days, Priamo passed away, causing a great shock to all of us family, friends and colleagues. The Mexican embassy is currently taking care of the cremation and return of his remains back to Mexico. Immediately following his death, the Mexican government issued a press release on the matter and most Mexican media outlets have covered the tragedy. Fellow artists and friends have already had a memorial service for him and more are currently being organized. Saluti. Sono amica molto vicina di Barbara Perea chi insiema a Priamo Lozada é stata curatrice dil Padiglione Messicano alla Biennale di Venezia. Sono stata durante l´opening dil Padiglione aspetando notizie sulla salute dil nosotro caro collega Priamo. Come dice Rafael -l´artista- tutti eravamo felici nelle feste messicani perche ci avevano detto che Priamo stava molto meglio e che c´eranno davvero possibilitá per lui. Priamo era un curatore impeccabile che ha lavorato tantisimo in Messico supratutto come curatore dil Laboratorio Arte Alameda, centro che senza Priamo non sarebbe quello che é oggi a livello internazionale. Priamo era una persona molto molto cara per tutti, era una persona intelligente, felice, allegra… con cuore latino festivo.

Nella seconda festa-inaugurazione dil Padiglione si ha informato publicamente a tutta la gente che é andata sul accidenti e sulla salute di Priamo. Non é vero che non si ha detto nulla. In Messico subito si ha fatto un tributo a Priamo nel Laboratorio Arte Alameda dove hanno portato fiori artisti, curatori, critici, gente di musei, amici e publico che ha saputo della tragica notizia. Barbara Perea con chi Priamo ha collaborato in tanti progetti e con chi aveva cominciato una produttora d´arte contemporáneo (Hélix) non ha potuto godere di tutto il lavoro che insieme a Priamo ha fatto. Il primo padiglione messicano a Venezia e finisce cosi… Loro due eranno davvero contenti di participare nella Biennale!!!! Barbara é stata tutto il tempo molto vicina a la famiglia di Priamo e spesso stava nel ospedale. É stata nella inaugurazione dil Padiglione perche doveva staré li ma la sua anima, era acanto al suo collegha e amico Priamo Lozada.

Molti dei colleghi messicani che siamo andati alla Bienale eravammo a Basilea quando aviamo recevuto la notizia e tutti eravammo sconvolti.

comunque se non ci fosse stata questa news di exibart non avremmo mai avuto una dichiarazione pubblica dell’artista del padiglione del Messico Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, questa è la prima.
Come si spiega che ancora non si sapiano le dinamiche dell’incidente? finestra, balcone, caduta. Nemmeno un comunicato stampa del padiglione, ne tantomeno della biennale.In fondo si tratta del curatore di uno dei padiglioni nazionali, non che ricosciuto per traiettoria e merito.
In messico abbiamo letto Il giornale Nuevo Excelsior il primo a pubblicare la notizia dice” amigos y artistas cercanos a Lozada explican que el 28 de mayo cayó de un tercer piso, al recargarse en un andamio vencido dentro del Palazzo Soranzo-van Axel, en Venecia, que el gobierno mexicano rentó como sede oficial”. altra era la dichiarazione del INBA il quale asicurava che l’incidente era avvevnuto nell’appartamento che lui divideva con altri colleghi.
Penso che dopo questo annuncio ci vorrebbe una dichiarazione; più chiarezza anche dei suoi amici e collaboratori, noi siamo pieni di dubbi, il silenzio non aiuta.

Sorry Paloma, my italian comprehension is limited, so apologies if I am not understanding your post completely (please also let me know if you would prefer for me to answer in spanish). Thanks for alerting me to the incorrect information published by Excelsior newspaper…I will seek for them to immediately correct that. I am a friend of Priamo’s, I was there in Venice with his family and friends, so I don’t understand why Excelsior made up the information that he fell from the Palazzo, or who they spoke to. All I can tell you is that the accident happened in the apartment he was renting in via cannaregio 1667, to be precise. This is where a neighbour found him, and this is where the police and ambulance picked him up to take him to the hospital. I don’t know what else to tell you, can you suggest what additional information exactly you are looking for? For the record, all the installations in the Palazzo where done and supervised by a professional team including engineers, architects, electricians, etc. All these works were approved and certified by Studio Tecnico Bernacchia Consulente Tecnico del Tribunale di Venezia according to Italian law. The Palazzo Van Axel is a very safe place (and a beautiful building, come check it out!).

Hi, I´m journalist from the newspaper Excelsior (Mexico) and I wrote the note about the accident of the curator Priamo Lozada in the Venecia Biennale. I just want to say tha the correct information about the place of the Lozada´s accident was in his apartment and not in the Palazzo Soranzo-van Axel, this information was confirmed by the Police of Venice a few days ago. The information published in Excelsior was incomplite. Apologies

There is no mystery to the accidental death of my brother. It was in fact just that, an accident. There is nothing to gain by tarnishing his life’s work and dedication. Priamo was a consumate professinal. His entire life was dedicated to doing exactly what he loved.

I have the details of his life and the unfortunate incident that ended it all too soon. He still had much to do, and his loss is in fact a tragedy. Those he worked with and those he loved will tell you of his amazing life.

If you must publish something about it, get to the truth; publish his truth. Its the honroable thing to do in order to honor his life; his work, and all that he accomplished for the arts, and artists across the globe.
